Obituary for Berta Weiler Katzen

Berta Weiler Katzen
Berta Weiler Katzen, 82, passed away on Sunday, November 26th at her home, The Forum in Houston, Texas. She spent the last 15 months battling cancer for the second time. Berta was born in Germany March 3, 1935, daughter to Gusta and Rose Weiler. She came to the USA from Germany during World War II when her parents escaped to Rock Island, Illinois.

Although she had an amazing voice and was going to be a professional singer, she instead chose to marry the love of her life, her husband Art Katzen. Due to Art’s career in running movie theatres Berta developed a love for the movies and theatre. Hollywood must have made an impression on her as she had a wonderful sense of fashion and style. She worked for 27 years at Vinson & Elkins. Berta loved her family, and many have referred to her as a kind and loving friend. She was well known for her love of ladybugs and that became a common nickname for her and she had many surrounding her home. Bert (as she was also called by most) was known for her brownies, she would share them with those close to her. She also loved her dogs, she had Shih tzus for many years and also a rescue named Gracie. She was known to throw dog parties and would invite her friends and their puppies to join her at her home.

She is survived by her sons Kenneth, his wife Tina and their daughters Sarah Rose and Jenifer Grace; and Jonathan, his wife Malini and their daughters Jasmine and Jade. She is preceded in death by her husband Arthur Norman Katzen.

In 2009, Berta gave her life to Jesus Christ and because of that decision we can take comfort knowing she is with our Heavenly Father.

Services to be held at Woodlawn Funeral Home 1101 Antoine Drive, 77055; 10 AM Visitation, 11 AM Funeral, with burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to Houston’s First Baptist Church -Benevolence Fund in her honor (7401 Katy Freeway, Houston 77024).
