Obituary for Betty Lee Scurlock (House)

Print
Betty Lee House Scurlock, 87, passed away in Herman Memorial Hospital with family and friends at her side on Monday October 1, 2018. Born November 5, 1930, to Mary Lee and William House, she grew up in Houston, Texas. She attended Reagan High School and was an active member of West End Baptist Church until she moved away in 1978. She married her sweetheart since 13 years old, Billy Joe Scurlock, in February of 1949.

Bill and Betty lived and raised their four children in the Spring Branch area of Houston. Together they were very active in church activities. Betty had an active social life and loved entertaining friends from church in their home. Throughout their marriage, they always made time to stop, take a break, and invite friends and family over for a meal or play cards, dominos.

Betty was a role model as a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a giver. Offering advice only when was asked for and always provided wise counsel. She had a serious business-like attitude towards work and responsibilities, yet at the same time loved to have fun.

Betty’s professional career started as a bus driver for the Montrose School for the Deaf. She later substitute taught the deaf when the need arose. Later, she worked for Security Church Finance where she was the office manager for approximate 12 years. Later still, she took an executive position at Patrick Thomas Properties.

In 1978, Billy and Betty moved to Palacios, Texas where they owned and operated Capt. Bill’s Seafood. There she quickly became involved with First Baptist Church of Palacios, where Betty taught a Bible Study Class there for over 35 years. In Palacios, Betty thrived. She had a successful business, was active in the Chamber of Commerce, and was the Chairman of the Matagorda Medical Board for over twenty years, along with several other civic activities where she was awarded numerous awards for her service to the community. Betty brought joy and love into every arena of her life.

Betty had a close circle of friends in Houston and then again in Palacios. She loved her friends: they shared each other’s lives, burdens, and joys.

Betty was married to Bill 67 years when he passed away in 2016. Leaving a legacy of family and faith, she leaves behind daughter Jo Scurlock Dillard and her husband Rick Dillard of San Antonio, Texas; Pamela Scurlock of New Braunfels, Texas; Max Scurlock, his wife Martha-Leigh and daughter Mary-Kate, Tom Scurlock and his wife Melinda, their daughter Erin Ruddle Potts, her husband Jack Potts, children Elijah, Isaac, Savannah, Penelope, and 4 step children Jackson, Deiderich, and Simka of Houston, Texas; daughter Amy Lazarine and her husband Matt, and son Billy of Marble Falls, Texas; Daughter Rachel Scurlock Richardson and husband David of London, England.

Betty’s faith was the defining feature of her life, counting her blessings and praising Jesus until her last breath.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to First Baptist Church of Palacios, memorial fund.
