Gladys Anita Hartman of Houston, Texas passed away peacefully on October 17, 2018 at the age of 97.
Gladys was born on September 28, 1921 in Houston, TX to William and Louise Smith. She was preceded in death by her father William, her mother Louise, her husband of 69 years, Edward Hartman, and their daughter, Carol Hartman Campbell. Gladys is survived by their son, Donald Hartman and his wife, Rosemarie, three granddaughters, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter.
Gladys grew up in the Heights and was a proud member of the Red Coats drill team at Reagan High School. She made life-long friendships in her junior and senior high school years. Ed and Gladys cherished their friends, and with their families, spent many summer weekends camping, boating, and water skiing at Lake Houston. Ed and Gladys moved out to the country near Brookshire in the early 1970’s. She enjoyed gardening, canning fruits and vegetables, cooking, and taking care of their pets. Gladys was also an expert seamstress who sewed for her granddaughters and great-granddaughters.
Gladys was devoted to her family and hosted beautiful Easter and Christmas celebrations every year. Ed and Gladys’ annual Easter egg hunt was looked forward to every year and attended by more than 40 family members and friends. They were wonderful grandparents who brought so much love and joy to their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Gladys’ funeral service will be held in the Woodlawn Chapel on Saturday, October 27, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Special Pals at www.specialpalsshelter.org or PO Box 841605, Houston, TX 77284.
