Helen Spriggs went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 8, 2018. She passed peacefully in her sleep after a long struggle with numerous health issues. She never complained about all of her many ailments, but lived her life with a smile and love of the Lord. She was an encouraging example to all who knew her. She will not soon be forgotten.
Helen Lunell Martin Spriggs was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on October 23, 1925, the youngest of five children. Her family moved several times in Texas before settling in Houston in 1934. Unbeknown to her or anyone else, she met her future husband in grade school and both of their families were very active together at West End Baptist Church. Both graduated from Sam Houston High School downtown.
After WWII, H. Dorwerd Spriggs returned home from the Navy and began dating Helen. They married at West End Baptist Church on July 20, 1947. Over the years they loved to travel and had many wonderful experiences and stories. They also loved family, daughter, Darleen, and son, Brian, but especially their grandchildren!... happily volunteering to babysit. They lived in Houston most of their 51 years of marriage.
After Dorwerd’s death in 1998, Helen continued her activities at Tallowood, including her Sonshine Sunday School class and Joy Of Living Bible Study. She also enjoyed traveling with friends and her children. The last years of her life, when mobility was difficult, she lived at The Abbey Assisted Living where she made many friends and kept busy with activities.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chloe Bell Martin and William Ollie Martin; husband, Henry Dorwerd Spriggs; brothers Billie Martin; Ralph Martin; and sister Oble Chloe Martin Foley. She is survived by Daughter, Darleen Bednar and husband, Ladd Bednar; Son, Brian Spriggs and wife, Danette; and grandchildren who called her Mimi: granddaughter Brianne Bednar Borisch and husband Tom; and grandsons Brandan Spriggs and Daniel Spriggs; Brother, Glenn Martin, Brother-in-Law, Whanell Spriggs; and wonderful nieces and nephews.
Memorial service is Saturday, September 15, 2018 at Tallowood Baptist Church, 555 Tallowood Road, 77024 at 11:00 a.m. with reception following.
