Obituary for Charles Pace

Charles Pace
Charles Lee Pace, age 89, of Houston, Texas, passed away on Monday (April 23, 2018) at North Houston Transitional after a long battle with dementia and two (2) bouts of pneumonia in two (2) months. He was the treasured husband of Nita (Adams) Pace, deceased.

Charles was born in Memphis, Texas on October 30, 1928 and grew up in the Ventura/Ojai area of California. He was the son of A.O. ‘Buster’ Pace and Mae (Freeland) Blandino. Charles proudly served our country in the Army in WWII as a member of the legendary 25th Infantry Division nicknamed Tropic Lightning by the US Marines. He was stationed in Osaka, Japan as part of the Army of the Occupation of Japan. Charles worked for the Texas State Highway Department for 30 years, eventually working his way up to traffic control. He was given several awards for meritorious service. He made many friends, both on and off the job and never hesitated to help friends or family in need. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Wayne and Sheila Pace, granddaughter Dawn Marie and great-grandson Hayden Bair all of Houston, Texas as well as brothers and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews too numerous to list.

Charles was a loving and caring person who enjoyed spending time with his family, particularly his great-grandson, Hayden. Before dementia set in full force, Hayden always lifted his spirits. He loved children. His passion and hobby was Square Dancing and being a Square Dance Caller. He had an incredible voice and his trademark was yodeling.

At Charles’ request, In lieu of flowers please make a donation in his name to either the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) or the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) to honor those who bravely fought and sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy.
