Joe Louis Walker, 79, passed away Friday, September 22, 2017 in Houston. Born March 3, 1938 in Athens, Louisiana to parents Kidd and Leola Walker, Mr. Walker will be fondly remembered as a loving and caring man devoted to his family.
Joe is preceded in death by his sister, Lady Belle Black and his brothers, Henry, Gessler, Huey P. and Kidd Curtis Walker. Left behind to share his memories are his loving wife of 50 years, Lydia; his daughter, Leola Theresa Walker and son, Joe Louis Walker Jr and his wife, Anna Marie; one sister, Emma Lee Walker and his brother-in-law who was more like a brother, Ruben; his dear friend, Bobby Hampton, an old high school friend, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Walker was a devoted member of the Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church for over 60 years and, as he loved to sing, he was in the choir for most of those years. He dearly loved his dogs, Toby, Gizmo, Daisy and Precious. He also loved barbecuing his famous sausage and brisket for family and friends while enjoying a cold Lone Star. For desert he would eat his favorite, pineapple upside down cake. Joe worked 20 years for the Chicago Bridge and Iron Corporation, and then worked another 20 years for the Houston Metro Transit Line. Moreover, Joe and wife Lydia were working in their own company, Walker Upholstery, at the same time he was working his other jobs.
He enjoyed watching the Houston Texans and the New Orleans Saints, but recently began a loyalty to the Seattle Seahawks given his son had move to Washington.
