Obituary for Arthur L. Meriwether

Arthur L. Meriwether
Arthur Lafayette Meriwether, 96, of Houston, and formerly of Jones Creek, TX, went to be with his Heavenly Father Monday, June 5, 2017. Mr. Meriwether passed his last months as he lived his life, a stoic trooper with faith, courage, knowledge, grace, and humor.

Mr. Meriwether was born on May 28, 1921 in Grandfield, Oklahoma on his Father’s wheat farm, the son of Alta Smith and Lafayette Monroe Meriwether.
He and his sisters spent long hours, year round working chores on the family farm learning lifelong lessons. The family went through difficult times holding on to the farm during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl years. After graduating from Grandfield High School in 1938, he joined the Coast Guard and proudly served in WWII. One of his great pleasures was being chosen for a WWII Honor Flight sponsored by Dow Chemical Company. After the war, he met his future wife Bernice Luke. The couple married, and lived on the family farm. Eventually, they decided to leave the farm and move to Jones Creek, TX where they raised their family. He worked in the painting industry and eventually worked for Dow Chemical Company until his retirement. After his retirement he became an active member in The Meriwether Society. He was an accomplished woodworker, and during retirement he spent many hours in his woodshop crafting works of art that he would donate to The Meriwether Society, and gift to friends & relatives. He was a long time active member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Houston, TX.

He loved his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and was always delighted to have them around. Mr. Meriwether was preceded in death by his wife Bernice of 64 years.

He is survived by: his children, Phyllis Meriwether Kroll and husband, Ross Kroll of Webster, TX; James Meriwether and wife Denise of Rockwall, TX; Rodney Meriwether and wife Susan of Houston, TX; his grandchildren, Jason Kroll and wife Abby of Parker, CO; Nicholas Meriwether of Houston, TX; Cale Meriwether and wife Jessica of Houston, TX; and his great grandchildren, David, Emma, and Alli Kroll of Parker, CO; and many relatives, cousins and friends.

A Vigil service with Rosary will be held Sunday, June 11, 2017 at Woodlawn Funeral Home 1101 Antoine, Houston, TX 77055 at 6:00 PM.

A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, June 12. 2017, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church 3600 Brinkman, Houston, TX at 11:00 AM. A reception will immediately follow the service in the church fellowship hall.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Shady Acres Personal Care Home for their loving care of Mr. Meriwether during his last months.
