Sue Najjar Hassen was born on April 21, 1933 in Beit Mery, Lebanon and emigrated with her parents and three brothers to Australia at the age of fifteen. In 1960 she visited the United States to meet her uncles and their families and to tour America.
Sue is preceded in death by her brother, David Najjar, father, Hussein Najjar and then her mother, Nazha Najjar. She is survived by her husband, Fred H. Hassen, her son, Anthony D. Hassen, and her brothers, Fowzy Najjar and Emile Najjar of Australia.
It was in 1962 that Sue met her husband at a Lebanese convention in Chicago. Within three months, they were married in St. Louis and moved to Houston to begin their 54 year journey of marriage. She was a professionally trained cosmetologist but left her practice with Simone and Joseph’s Beauty Salon of Houston to join her husband in their men’s clothing business, Fredrik Anthony Custom Clothier for the past 40 years in Houston.
Sue was also highly accomplished in most hand work crafts dealing with yarn and thread such as knitting, crochet, needlepoint and custom tailoring. Whenever she heard of a family member or friend that was to have a baby, she quickly shopped for yarn and began knitting blankets, as well over 30 proud recipients would attest. And no telling how many booties, sweaters and afgans she had made in her lifetime beginning at the age of five. In addition, she was an excellent cook greatly interested in the foods and customs of other cultures, and rarely turned down an opportunity to travel.
Although Sue had some short term memory issues, her long term memory was amazing. Not only could she recall events over 60 years ago, she could tell you what clothes she was wearing at that time.
She was a gracious hostess who loved being around the people she loved. And her greatest love was her family, particularly her only child, Anthony whom she adored and was so proud. Sue was truly an amazing person who was loved by so many and will be greatly missed by those who loved her. May God bless her soul and watch over her in peace.
