MARGUERITE ESTELLA ARISMAN COLLISTER 1917-2016
Marguerite Estella Arisman Collister passed away July 18, 2016, at the age of 99 years, at Brookdale Tanglewood Senior Living in Houston, TX. She was born in Tyrone, New Mexico July 12, 1917 to Harry F. Arisman and Velma Elkins Arisman. The eldest of two children, Marguerite and her brother, Harry F. Arisman, Jr., grew up in the Houston Heights where she met the love of her life, Frederick (Fred) W. Collister. A proud graduate of John H. Reagan High School Class of 1935, Marguerite attended Massey Business College and would become an accomplished statistical typist. She worked several years for Ernst and Ernst before leaving the workforce to become a wonderful stay-at-home wife and mother. Even after she left the company, Mr. Ernst would ask her to do special projects, working from home. No one was faster or more accurate than Marguerite.
Marguerite and Fred married May 9, 1938 and would enjoy 72 years together before his death in 2010. Except for the years Fred was in the Navy and they moved around, they lived in Houston until retirement took them to Bayou Vista in Hitchcock, TX and then to Sugar Land to be near their eldest daughter, Cyril. They were the parents of three children: Frederick W., Jr. (“Skippy,” who died at the age of 3 ½ years), Marguerite Cyril and Carol Ann.
Fred was an avid athlete and enjoyed many outdoors activities, especially golf. Marguerite did not, until Fred bought her a set of golf clubs for Christmas one year in the early 1950s. He announced that she could play golf or not, but he was going to play on the weekends and would love to have her learn so they could enjoy that activity together and with friends. And, learn she did, going on to become Club Champion multiple times at both Sharpstown Country Club and Quail Valley Country Club, breaking 80 (regularly) and recording a hole-in-one. Marguerite wasn’t a long hitter, but her drives were always straight and her short game outstanding. She was an avid and excellent golfer well into her 70s.
In her later years, she and her family members enjoyed many lively games of Bingo with other residents at Brookdale Tanglewood. She was thrilled to win what would become the last game she ever played.
A child of the depression and World War II, life wasn’t easy, but Marguerite had a strong constitution and was ever positive. She loved her family passionately and was an exceptionally good daughter, sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Her husband, parents, brother, and son precede Marguerite in death. Left to mourn her absence are her daughters: Cyril Hosley and husband, Rick, of Houston and Carol McKeown and husband, Frank, of Casa Grande, Arizona. She also leaves behind four grandchildren: Richard A. Hosley III and wife, Alice, of Golden, CO.; Sean F. Hosley and wife, Kelly, of Addison, TX; Michelle Hosley Bedient and husband, Eric, of Frisco, TX; and Scott M. Parker and wife, Jennifer, of Jacksonville, FL. She also leaves five great-grandchildren: Ben Bedient, Quinn Hosley, Ford Hosley, Lexi Bedient, and Emelyn Hosley. Also surviving are her two nephews: Robert Arisman and wife, Burma, of Katy, TX and Bruce Arisman and wife, Sherry, of Crosby, TX and their families.
Marguerite’s family would like to acknowledge and thank so many for the excellent care she received over the years that allowed her to live such a long, full life, especially Dr. E. Barrington (Ric) Davis, Dr. Terry Holster, Dr. C. Donald Ford, Dr. Bhadresh Shaw, Dr. Matthew McMenemy and the caregivers and staff at Brookdale Tanglewood and Brookdale Hospice. A viewing and visitation will be held Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 4:30 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 5:00 p.m. at the Woodlawn Funeral Home and Cemetery Chapel, 1101 Antoine Drive, Houston, TX 77055. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and her nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marguerite’s memory to the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, P. O.
