Rebecca “Becky” Miller, 70, formerly of Houston, Texas peacefully entered into eternal life on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at Houston Hospice following a brief battle with cancer.
She is survived by her only child, Holly Tatuaca (Edward) and family of Pearland, Texas; husband, Ted R. Miller, Jr., of Destin, Florida; brothers James Cheatwood (Deloris), Daniel Cheatwood (Terri) and Richard Cheatwood (Shelia), sisters Judy Golden (Jim), Connie Lunde (Drew), and Cindy Petty, and their families; and many other members of a large and loving extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Clyde Cheatwood and Mary Freeman, brother Claude Cheatwood and brother-in-law Malachi Petty.
Becky was born September 7th, 1946 in Shreveport, Louisiana, however, moved to Houston early in life with her parents and siblings. Becky was the fourth child out of eight. With a large family and many younger siblings, a great responsibility fell upon the older children especially Becky and her sister Judy. Becky was a very giving, loyal, and generous sister. She attended John H. Reagan Senior High School where she graduated in 1964.
Becky married Charles A. Helmke in 1965, and their daughter, Holly was born in 1971. Raising her daughter in those days, Becky was one of the first generation of “working mothers” setting an example for her daughter of “work life balance” before that term ever came into use. Together, they created a home filled with love and many happy memories, especially of the frequent gatherings of family and friends, family outings and vacations. Becky was extremely proud of her daughter and never missed a school award program, choir concert or recital. Becky and Charles were married for 23 years and remained life-long friends.
Becky had a long and well respected career in Health Information Management, first with Memorial Healthcare System in Houston, and then at hospitals in Florida and Louisiana. While also a busy wife and mother, she went back to school to further her career and completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Records Administration from the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1985. She earned the admiration of her colleagues and peers, and served as a mentor to others in the field where she made many lasting friendships.
In 1996 Becky moved to the Ft. Myers/Sebring area of central Florida, where she met Ted Miller. Becky and Ted married in November of 2000, and they later moved first to Patterson, Louisiana, and then to the Destin, Florida area where they enjoyed the beautiful beaches of the Emerald Coast. They also enjoyed traveling to many destinations and to visit their extended families and beloved grandchildren.
Becky was always involved in her church, no matter where she called home. She taught Sunday school, and enjoyed the fellowship and friendships that were forged throughout her life. She enjoyed the old hymns, and had the voice of an angel.
Becky was loved by many and will be missed dearly.
A private graveside service will be held on August 5th at Woodlawn Cemetery.
