Obituary for Garland Driskill

Garland  Driskill
Garland E Driskill born April 3, 1926 in Kingsville, TX went to be with the Lord on June 12, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Dora Hough Driskill, his second parents, Uncle James Hough and Aunt Florida Back Hough, his loving wife of 55 years Mary Boatright Driskill, sisters Martha Jane Driskill Emerson, Lillie Driskill Glover, Florene Hough, brothers Garvin Driskill, J.D. Driskill, Alton Hough, Ira Hough and son Randy Driskill. He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Driskill and her partner Mike Allnutt of Baytown, TX, sister Hilda Buchanan of Norman, OK, daughter n law, Yvonne Driskill of Burnett, TX., daughter -of-the-heart, Sue Chalmers of Brenham, TX., Grandsons, Randy Long of New York, NY, Kevin Chalmers (Laurie) of Wylie, TX, Mikee Eldridge (Amanda) of Spring, TX, Lee Chalmers (Ester) of Brenham, TX, eight great grandchildren and a great, great grandson. Sisters n law, LaVena Boatright, Laveen, AZ, Marilyn Boatright of Allen, TX and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and longtime friends.

Garland served in the U.S. Navy during WW II as a Seaman Second Class, Aug 1944 – July 1946. After his honorable discharge from active duty, he served as a member of the Naval Reserve until May 1948. After returning from the war, Garland joined the Bricklayers and Allied Craftsman Union in Tulsa, OK where he learned his trade of setting marble, granite and other stone. The marble trade brought him to Houston in 1951, where he built a life for himself and his family. Garland worked as a Marble Mason for over 44 years before retiring. He was a proud Union Member for 78 years. He was known as the “Old Master” among his peers. He was a kind and gentle soul that was always willing to help neighbors, family or friends in need. His will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be Friday, June 16, 5-8:00 pm, Funeral will be Saturday, June 17, 3:00 pm with Chaplin Jim Mayer officiating at Woodlawn Funeral Home with interment to follow, with full military honors, in the Woodlawn Garden of Memories.

Special Thanks to the Methodist West Hospital ICU/ 5 East medical staff and social workers and Vitas Hospice of Houston/Woodlands for the wonderful compassion and care given to him, his last few weeks on this earth.
